Brian Buchanan

Director

Dr. Brian Buchanan is a intensivist, internist, and transport/flight physician who is active in wide range of critical care/point-of-care ultrasound applications. He practices primarily at the University of Alberta Hospital in the General Systems Intensive Care Unit. He has completed fellowship training in critical care ultrasound including trans-thoracic/esophageal echocardiography, vascular, lung and trauma ultrasound. Dr. Buchanan is an adult echocardiography diplomate with the National Board of Echocardiography. His clinical and research interests include medical education, curriculum development, critical care ultrasonography and quality assurance. Brian is also the Associate Chair for Critical Care Ultrasound and Simulation.

Aws Alherbish

Co-director

Dr. Aws Alherbish is an intensivist, cardiologist and echocardiographer with an experienced background in resuscitative echocardiography and a wide range of critical care ultrasound applications. He practices at both the University of Alberta hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton. He is currently the Cardiac Care Unit Co-Director at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. His main interests are in cardiac critical care, cardiac and non-cardiac ultrasound applications for the critically ill and advanced echocardiography.

Vincent Lau

Dr. Vincent Lau is an academic intensivist and researcher who practices at the General Systems Intensive Care Unit at the University of Alberta Hospital. He has completed a critical
care ultrasound fellowship at Western University under Dr. Robert Arntfield, and is a Diplomate of the National Board of Echocardiography (Examination of Special Competence in Critical Care Echocardiography). His interests include the importance of critical care/resuscitation medicine uses of advanced point-of-care ultrasound applications (TTE/TEE, transcranial Doppler/neuro- sonology and whole body ultrasound) alongside research and education in these areas.

Warren Luksun

Warren Luksun is an anesthesiologist and critical care medicine
physician at the University of Alberta. Following a residency in
anesthesia at the University of Toronto, he completed fellowship
training at in cardiac anesthesia at Toronto General Hospital and adult critical care medicine at the University of Toronto. He is a Diplomate - Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography of the National Board of Echocardiography and holds Level 3, transesophageal echocardiography certification from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

His experience in education and administration includes service as the Director, Quality and Education for the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Toronto General Hospital and Course Director, Point-of-care Ultrasound in Acute Medicine at the Critical Care Canada Forum. He has been recognized by the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Toronto, Ontario Medical Association, and Canadian Medical Association for his work in medical education and administration.

LEon Byker

CCUS fellow, intensivist

Dr Leon Byker is the CCUS fellow for the academic year 2020-2021. He is a recently qualified Intensivist-Internist and comes with a broad array of clinical experience. After completing training in South Africa, he relocated to Canada with his family and worked in rural Family Medicine, Emergency medicine, Critical Care as an Associate in ICU and as a Transport Physician for the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) in Regina, Saskatchewan. During his time as a generalist, he completed many ultrasound courses and obtained Independent Practitioner and Instructor status for the EDE course (Emergency Department Echo) before he finally returned to residency. He completed internal medicine training in Saskatoon, SK and critical care medicine in Edmonton, Alberta (Univeristy of Alberta). He works as an Intensivist at the Regina General Hospital, Regina, SK and the Grey Nuns hospital in Edmonton, AB.

Chris FUng

Dr. Christopher Fung is a subspecialty trained body radiologist with Medical Imaging Consultants and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta.  His clinical practice focuses on diagnostic sonography and interventional ultrasound, as well as body MRI, with specific interest in pancreatic and urologic imaging.  He completed his fellowship training in Cross Sectional Imaging at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Fung is the Assistant Program Director for the Radiology Residency Program at the University of Alberta and is responsible for the medical student clerkship electives in Radiology.  Dr. Fung's research interests include healthcare economics, quality assurance, and clinical guideline assessment.
